Safer schools / crime prevention

Crime Prevention (CP) is based within the Health and Safety Team and the work covers all aspects of Shropshire Council premises, property and staff. Crime Prevention contributes to the Authority's participation in the Crime and Disorder Act 1998, Section 17.

The work of CP includes advising on pro-active security, crime prevention and personal safety. In addition, assisting with addressing problems/ issues i.e. anti-social behaviour, theft, burglary and staff safety. The work is across all sectors of the Council.

As the design and construction of the built environment influences the quality of life, Crime Prevention encourages the inclusion of 'Secured by Design' - a national policy by the Association of Chief Police Officers. The principles of Secured by Design are to create safer environments and establish a standard of security. Secured by Design should be considered and implemented in building maintenance, improvements, extensions and new build.

Crime Prevention promotes and assists Shropshire schools with the 'Safer School' scheme. This is not the traditional approach to reviewing security/safety. It is a scheme that sets a minimum standard in security/ safety and it involves an accreditation. Following the accreditation, schools continue to work on the scheme so to maintain the standard. Over 130 schools in Shropshire are involved in the scheme.

The CP has considerable knowledge and experience and able to advise on design, managerial and technical options/solutions in respect of security/safety. When helping to resolve problems/ issues, the aim is to address real problems rather than perceived problems.

Crime Prevention liaises with Children's Services, the Health and Safety Team, Risk Management, West Mercia Police, Property Services, Fire Safety and Access Officers.
